Soup shooters: ultimate party food

By Nancy Nichols

Soup shooters make a great first impression on your guests — a little sip of hot or cold soup served in a shot glass, tiny cup, or elegant cordial glass sets the tone for the decadent goodies to come.

Having a football watch party? Get the team spirit going by serving a flavorful soup in a glass decorated with team logos. Hosting a more formal affair? Fill an elegant short glass with a light broth or chilled soup. If you’re throwing a themed party, it’s easy to choose a soup to match your mood. Start a spa party with a lovely, low-calorie cucumber purée. Complement the sounds of the mariachi band playing at your south-of-the-border fiesta with a shot of tortilla soup.

Preparing a soup for shooters

  • Take advantage of fresh, local ingredients available at your local farmers markets and food stores. This is a great way to showcase a fruit or vegetable in a different light. Picture a platter of tall shot glasses filled with garnet-colored red beet soup.
  • Remember your guests will not be using a spoon with their soup. Make sure you choose a soup recipe that is easily blended into a drinkable version. Avoid serving chili or recipes with pastas and rice, and stick to thin broths or cream soups that are easy to sip.
  • If you have rented the glasses, think about using them twice (after washing, of course). Start the party with a hearty warm tomato soup and end the evening by passing a shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream or warm drinking chocolate.

Gathering glasses

If you are having a large gathering and don’t want to buy a quantity of shot glasses, you can find as many as you need at most party rental companies. However, if you have a regular club meeting, team sports party, or business gathering, you should consider buying a set of customized glasses.
