Customize your furniture

By Paula Felps

Customize your furniture with DIY techniques that take it from blah to amazing. If your home décor isn’t working for you, invest in some great pieces that will last and “do over” the rest. You don’t have to be rich to give your home décor a rich look.

“There are so many ways to give your space the look that you want,” says Champe Granger, founder of MyDesignGuide.com. The site’s staff of interior designers helps visitors develop a “road map” so they can move forward with a plan for affordable, custom looks in their living spaces.

“We emphasize investing in the things you’ll keep,” she says. “The longer it will be in your home, the more you should be willing to spend on it.”

By updating current pieces in your home and blending them with new purchases, you can achieve a fresh new look for any room. Some of Granger’s best advice for creating an affordable customized space includes:

  • Make friends with paint. “Spray paint is the solution to most of the world’s problems,” Granger says. “If your wood finishes aren’t complementing each other or giving your home the look you want, you can stain or paint the existing furniture for a whole new look.”
  • Do it over. Maybe you don’t need a new chair; maybe you just need a new look for the one you’ve already got. Invest in fabrics you love and have your furniture reupholstered. (Or, if you’re good at such things, do it yourself!)
  • Stick to your plan. Once you determine your style, stay with it. “That pink fluffy pillow might be cute, but it’s not going to work in a mountain lodge theme.”
