Staircases are often seen as functional structure rather than as a place to display style, but steps provide ample opportunities for adding a bit of pizzazz.
“Reviving this sometimes-overlooked area can really add new life to the home,” says Janie Hirsch, ASID, the principal of award-winning, Georgia-based J. Hirsch Interior Design. “Since it’s a separate space, you can really just do what you want and make it special.”
Updating stair treads
Adding a runner is one option for carpeted stairs, but Janie suggests removing the carpet altogether. “It’s a simple update, and regardless of what’s underneath — nice wood or a more inexpensive hybrid — a variety of ways exist to create a beautiful finish.”
Janie offers the following ideas to spruce up wooden treads:
- Tiles: Add to the riser for a unique look.
- Runners: Unending options in different textures, patterns, and colors are available.
- Paint: Use multiple top coats to protect from wear.
Whether carpeted or wooden, straight or curved, designed as a focal point or simply functional, nearly any staircase can benefit from one of these options:
- Balusters: Replace with updated wooden or iron spindles. Try grouping two or three on each tread.
- Painted handrail: Provides a great contrast to the stair tread.
- Fixture: Install a playful light to draw attention to the stairway.
- Wall décor: Express personality through unique groupings of photos, artwork, or other framed items, such as an antique tapestry.
- Furniture: Creating a nook for reading on a large landing.
