Because scents affect our emotions and behaviors, the practice of aromatherapy has grown, sprouting the popularity of finding ways to connect with nature.
Neutral aromatherapy promotes the use of natural items — including herbs and fruits — to create an aromatic ambiance, invoke a particular mood, or possibly even cure minor ailments.
Registered aromatherapist and certified clinical aromatherapy practitioner Kelly Holland Azzaro explains our love affair with natural scents like this:
“[Introducing people] to aromatic herbs and fruits [such as lemon] for natural uses at home gives a sense empowerment by having tools that are simple, easy, and effective.”
Creating smell-goods in your home
So how can you create an aromatic ambiance in your home? Holland Azzaro offers these tips:
Get a whiff: Invest in an aromatherapy diffuser and fill the air with pure essential oils. “Use energizing-type oils for daytime and relaxing, soothing scents for nighttime,” she recommends.
Honor herbs: Use fresh garden herbs in place of garden flowers to create decorative, aromatic bouquets. Her suggestions: peppermint (energizing), lemon-thyme and lemon balm (refreshing and uplifting), and pineapple sage (soothing).
Lemon zest: Leftover lemons are a perfect solution for wiping down counter tops and sinks. “Lemons offer a natural antibacterial property and chemical-free way to clean your kitchen and bathroom,” she says.
Clean and fragrant: Add essential oils to water and baking soda to scour bathroom areas.
Scents and Sensibility: Selling your home? Entice prospective buyers by diffusing essential oils. Try lavender and sweet orange for relaxing aromas, or place a pot of live rosemary at the front door or in the kitchen and leave a note telling buyers: “Please pick a piece. Rosemary helps with focus and memory.”
Natural aromatherapy techniques are simple, effective, and focused on making healthy choices for practical living.
“More people are seeking out natural ways to feel better,” Holland Azzaro says, “while bringing that energy into their home for family and friends too.”
