Decorative wall moulding is a great way to create a new look in any room, and with today’s options, it’s possible to transform the style of walls and ceilings dramatically.
“You can give the room such an incredible look,” says Glen Boudreaux, RID, ASID, and partner with the interior design firm Boudreaux Rosenberg. “One of the things we’re doing on ceilings is putting up moulding with cork or metal panels inside. There’s much you can do that will really change the look.”
Defining a style
Chair rails and crown moulding are some of the most common uses, and Boudreaux says there are a number of ways to incorporate them into today’s designs. He is quick to point out that moulding gives rooms a more traditional look, so those who want to make their surroundings more contemporary will use more of a square moulding or no moulding at all.
Chair rails are a great way to combine two different looks; their main purpose is to bridge different colors or materials.
“You might have a faux finish on the wall above and stained wood below; it is mainly used to change materials, colors, or evoke a certain style,” Boudreaux says. “You can also modify the chair rail to fit the room — stain it cherry or walnut for a traditional look, or give it a pickled or distressed finish for a coastal theme.”
