Prepping for moving day

By Brittany Morgan

Moving day is both an exciting and stressful time, and organization and a few helpful tips can make your move more manageable. Focus on things you can do ahead of time to conquer your to-do list before the big day.

Rent a truck

To ensure availability, order a moving truck or van at least two weeks before your moving day. When determining the size you need, keep in mind that it should be able to accommodate about 15 percent more than what you own for ample space. Also, you’ll use less gas making it to your new home in one go rather than several trips.

Pack as you go

Autumnn Darden, U-Pack Moving blogger, recommends packing bits at a time before moving day.

“Begin packing things you don’t use every day and keep the ‘essentials’ until the end,” Darden suggests. “It’s also a good idea to pack a ‘move-in day’ box of supplies you’ll need the first day at your new home, including trash bags, paper towels, disposable eating utensils, a utility knife, all-purpose cleaner, and light bulbs.”

For a fun get-together, gather friends and family for a packing party. Have each guest bring a supply such as:

  • Boxes or crates
  • Rolls of tape
  • Old newspapers
  • Pairs of scissors
  • Permanent markers

Have snacks and plenty of beverages on hand and play upbeat music for a festive atmosphere.

Switch your utilities

After a hard day’s work, you’ll want to enjoy all that your new home has to offer, and that includes hot water and electricity. A few days before the move, call your utility companies and cancel your services effective the day after you move. Then call the utility providers in your new area and schedule new services for the day of arrival. To avoid a headache, don’t wait until the day of your move to check this off your list.
