10 Inspirations for Mantel Decorating

By Lisa Martin

Mantel decorating this fall and winter will give your entire room a makeover. These simple ideas and tips will transform your fireplace into a sublime focal point.

Autumn decorating ideas

  1. “Texture is the preeminent design feature in the fall,” says decorator and author Carolyn Roehm. To “up” the contrast quotient, pair pretty dahlias with hypericum berries or tall grasses with chestnuts “bursting out of their spiky skins.” Raid your backyard for interesting botanical specimens.
  2. Layered looks: Objects of differing heights create interest, like 3 or 5 candles in various holders. Group items in the same color palette to avoid a cluttered look.
  3. Ginny Bean, publisher of Ginny’s catalog, uses unexpected containers like terracotta pots and chipped china pitchers when designing her eye-catching vignettes at home.
  4. Build a pyramid of apples, mini-pumpkins, or gourds using wooden skewers or hot glue. Weave ropes of metallic beads or pearls around the base and through the architecture.

Holiday decorating ideas

  1. Pour bags of fresh, whole cranberries into clear crystal vases or glass cylinders of varying heights. If the containers are the same size, position one or more on top of books, pedestals, or wrapped boxes.
  2. For a twist on traditional stockings, hang red and white socks of different patterns. Clip them onto a green ribbon with old-fashioned wood clothespins.
  3. Raid the toy box for a dose of whimsy. Tie ivory tulle bows around toy trains, vintage teddy bears, and other playthings. Tuck in sprigs of real or faux holly for an even more festive look.

All-purpose decorating

  1. If you want to create a more formal feel on top of the mantel, create symmetrical displays. For a fresher, more contemporary flavor, do your groupings in threes or fives and position them at one end or another.
  2. Instead of hanging framed art or mirrors directly above the fireplace, prop them on the mantel and against the wall for a twist on tradition.
  3. When in doubt, set a clock on the mantel. It always looks right!
