Team up with your neighbors and enjoy the best your area has to offer
By Kristy Alpert
Venturing out to new destinations with your neighbors can be a great way to build stronger relationships while visiting something different and exciting. Check out these fun ways to set up a group of neighbors to discover what your neighborhood has to offer.
Mommy-and-me playgroups
Get to know other parents in your neighborhood by joining a playgroup or social club such as mommy-and-me groups that offer friendship, support, exercise and fun activities for you and your children.
These groups are popping up all over, so check with neighbors to see if your community already has one … if not, start your own! Gather all the stay-at-home moms and dads with little ones and take turns planning outings with the kids, from parachute games at the park to trips to the county fair.
Lunch bunch
Grab your neighbors and organize a group to meet for lunch weekly or monthly. Take turns picking the local lunch hub, only eat at new restaurants, or take a trip to the farmers market and make it a home-cooked lunch group!
Hobby and craft classes
Community centers and community colleges offer great ways to learn a new skill or hobby offered locally with a friend, from cookie decorating to gardening. Call your local community college or community center for listings of class times and locations.
Walking or jogging groups
Hit the ground running with your neighbors by starting a jogging or speed-walking group to explore new areas around you. Take turns planning your different routes while making sure to include some fun destinations along the way. Who wouldn’t run a 5k for a great coffee treat?
Culture club
For a taste of the finer aspects of your area, gather your friends for a monthly culture club. Limit your excursions to places such as museums, fine restaurants, symphonies in the park, or wine tastings.
